What Is Biblical Counseling

Paraphrased From Dr. John Babler's Counseling by the Book

  1. Ministering with Scripture: Hebrews 4:12 highlights the living power of God's Word, revealing its central role in Biblical counseling, where it serves as the inerrant tool for wisdom.
  2. Part of Local Church: Biblical counseling is grounded in the local church's community, as depicted in John 3:3-8. It encourages mutual support and growth among believers.
  3. Role of the Holy Spirit in Believers: According to John 14:26, the Holy      Spirit indwells, empowers, and leads transformed believers. His presence and work are the primary driving force in the counseling process.
  4. Ministering the Word of God: Once again, focusing on  Hebrews 4:12, counselors must always rely on the Bible to provide wisdom and insight, knowing that God's Word is sufficient and adequate.
  5. Evangelizing and Teaching: Based on Matthew 28:18-20, counseling is about evangelizing      the lost and helping believers grow in their faith with the Gospel,
  6. Scripture's  Sufficiency: Scriptures like 2 Timothy 3:16-17 and 2 Peter 1:3-4 declare that God's Word has everything we need for all aspects of life.      This sufficiency guides every counseling session.
  7. Confronting Sin: Romans 3:23 and 6:23 remind us that confronting sin through self-confrontation is essential. It's not about judgment but loving correction and guidance toward repentance.
  8. Lovingly Calling to Repentance: As 2 Timothy 2:24-26 instructs, the call to repentance is done with love and gentleness, always aiming for restoration.
  9. Patiently Walking Through Sin Issues: 1 Thessalonians 5:14 encourages counselors to walk purposefully and patiently with people as they wrestle with life-dominating sin, always pointing them to Christ.
  10. Involving Others in the Church: 1 Corinthians 12 emphasizes that the church's diverse gifts can play a part in counseling. The community's collective wisdom and support can be invaluable in assisting those in need.
